In a NY Post Opinion, someone writes that the NYC Council is wrong for giving $130,000 to “Jewish vigilante groups like Shomrom,” who are “unskilled and ill-equipped for Police work.” The report accuses that Police were only “belatedly” informed about Kletzky going missing back on July 11.
A few notes:
A) Shomrom was called at approximately 6:14 PM that Kletzky is missing. Police – who mostly dismisses these reports for up to 24 hours – was called from the father’s phone two hours later at 8:30. Only after and due to Shomrom organizing masses to go out and search, did Police go into over-drive to help with the search.
B) OEM produced a ”Missing Person Alert” only later the next day. When I asked OEM why it took them so long to produce such an Alert, they told me – last week – that they act only after NYPD requests such an alert. The question is: Why did the skilled NYPD not ask for this Alert 12-18 hours earlier?
C) A Private citizen, Mr. German, with the help of Shomrom, did a fine detective job by searching video after a video that led to Aron; a simple Police work that it didn’t pass the mind of all the well-trained NYPD officers to do on their own.
D) An “unskilled” teenage Orthodox Jewish boy, out on the streets due to calls from Shomrom to assist in the search, was the one who saw frist the car of Levi Aron. This – in addition to the video detective work by the unskilled German and Shomrom – led Cops to finding Aron.
It is fair to say that Aron could have been located 8-10 hours earlier (and Leiby perhaps saved too) had the NYPD with its skilled, unlimited, well-equipped resources done the job that Shomrom has done. This outcome suggests that on top the $130,000 already allocated for Shomrom and Shmirah in the NYC budget, Lawmakers should consider cutting the NYPD budget and directing those funds to help Shomrom expand its force and training even more. As a result, they will in future cases be able to get things done even faster.
