Debate: Does the USA Have a Government of Kindness?

A “Malches Shell Chesed” (a Government of Kindness) is how the Orthodox Jewish community refers to the USA Government. I would like to open a debate on this issue. Ill give both sides and feel free to post a comment. Ill God-willing moderate and publish it.

YES it is: There is no other government in the world that has sacrificed so much of its resources and lives to the cause of freedom as the USA. People living in the USA have freedom and the poor are well taken care. Besides, the USA has the best Justice system in the world.

NOT really: Few countries have such a large economy or population as the USA, so sure the United States gave to the world more than other countries, but don’t forget: The US got strongly involved in WWII only AFTER it got attacked. Until then, persecution of the Jews or the killings of millions didn’t seem to take up much space in the government’s business. Besides, what was the death of 1.5 million in Vietnam during the war all about?

As for the others issues. Well, the USA is not the only country where poor recieve assistance or where you can practice religion. Plus, few Justice system in Western countries would have such disasters as the DSK case or destroy people due to nonviolent white collar crime as the USA does.

So… What do you think: Does the USA have a “Government of Kidness”? Are others as kind as the USA? Is the USA not kind at all? Is the term maybe over used? Can others at all claim the same kindness as the USA?

Putin laughs of the USA “Justice” system!

  • A Jew

Maybe ask Rubashkin about America’s greatness

To some extend it is, it turned out to be.

Not many of the Congressmen or Senators would go in fire for the Jews’ sake, but since America has a very broad ‘freedom’ and ‘tolerance’ policy towards all nations and religions – the Jews found safe haven in it.

As for the justice system: kill a person (G-d forbid), and all you need is some $$$ for a good lawyer, evade taxes (or steal otherwise from the government): Heaven have mercy on your soul…

Well I would like to ask you would you move to any other country? I think that after all America is still the greatest country still there is always place for better and things to be changed as our justice system that has to be changed entirely after all there are failures in every other country so putting on a scale America against all other countries I think America is still the winner

I wouldn’t really say that America is a “Malchis Shel Chesed” if taking care of the poor and granting people freedoms are your qualifiers. The method by which America supports the poor (or those who claim to be poor) is by forcing citizens, under threat of violence, to give up a portion of their earned income to pay for others who, for various reasons, do not have stable, substantial REPORTED sources of income. Thievery and coercion do not sound like chesed to me. It also doesn’t really sound like freedom to me either. America uses many buzzwords and distractions to make itself look benevolent, kind, giving, and open, but they are far from the truth. I do think that the average citizen in America is safer than in many other countries, but this safety has a price, the paying of which is debatably more dangerous than many of the supposed dangers that we are being protected against.

If we define a “Malchis Shel Chesed” to mean that we are, within some sorts of bounds, free to do general things that average people want to do, and as long as we dont go outside of certain bounds, we are left alone, and as long as we support the status quo, we won’t be bothered, then I suppose it is a malchis shel chesed.

America is only as “good” or “bad” as it’s citizens BECAUSE we are a FREE country……I thank God always that I was born in the USA and if we are not “good” enough for other people then don’t come here!

    • Yossi Gestetner

Putin is happy where he is born. Does not mean Russia is a good place.

no country has totally freedom b”h(imagine how a country would look with totally freedom NOT GOOD), the united states is the country with the most freedom, yes it is here anti-Semites in the us and in the us government but a small percent, in general there are not anti-Semites in the us & in the us government , the us is the best country for Jews (I think even better then Israel) and we have to thank god for giving us a country like the united states of America

    • Yossi Gestetner

Law in order is not communism; Lawlesness is not freedom.

  • v katan

if the us was not a government of kindnes YOU WOULD NOT EVEN THINK OF RUNNING FOR CONGRESS. so here is the answer for this debate

    • Yossi Gestetner
