I am sure you are wondering ‘what does the Defense Department have to do with NY’s Primaries? Well, get this: Albany is fighting how to draw up new Congressional and state legislative maps. Therefore, lawmakers want the Primaries to take place in September to give them enough time to battle it out. This date was rejected by the Defense Department as too late because due to a new law the DOD needs 45 days before an election to send absentee ballots to the troops overseas, and of course it takes time to print them, etc.
So where does this leave NY’ers? The Huffington Post Reports “a federal judge ruled that New York’s primary for federal offices could be held no later than Aug. 18. This would result in a total of three primaries: an April presidential vote, an August congressional vote and a September state and local office vote.”
Of course, don’t forget your School Board vote in May and the General Elections votes in November are also scheduled to take place in, well… 2012!
