USA Today Reports: Rick Perry is joining most of the GOP field and rejecting a debate moderated by Donald Trump.
In a statement, Perry’s campaign says the Texas governor told Trump he’ll be busy meeting Iowa voters ahead of the Jan. 3 caucuses.
“Traditional retail campaigning in the days and weeks leading up to the Iowa caucus is the Perry campaign’s top priority,” the statement says.
The statement says Perry, one of several candidates to pay a visit to Trump at his New York City office, “respects” Trump “and the folks at Newsmax,” the conservative publication hosting the Dec. 27 debate.
Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have accepted the invitation to the Trump-moderated debate. Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney are taking a pass, with Huntsman and Paul making clear they think Trump posing questions is too much like a reality TV show.
Michele Bachmann said on Fox News this morning that she’s still undecided and concerned about Trump’s recent comment that he still might run as an independent.
