Politico Reports: He wasn’t in any of the states that held contests — Colorado, Minnesota or Missouri — and he chose not to make an election-night speech to supporters.
In fact, Gingrich pretty much skipped the trio of contests where he didn’t fare terribly well anyway, having barely campaigned in Colorado and Minnesota. Instead, he kicked off a bus tour of Ohio on Tuesday to contest a state whose primary is still a month away. He says he’s focused on the Southern states that vote on Super Tuesday on March 6 in which he thinks he’ll be strong.
The decision could amount to a big strategic error for the former House speaker as his chief rival among conservative voters, Rick Santorum, had a big night, winning in all three states that held contests. But Gingrich insisted in an interview Tuesday that he knows what he’s doing.
“We are trying to look at the whole country at the same time,” Gingrich said in an interview on CNN’s Situation Room. “I stayed in Florida and fought it out and Sen. Santorum went on [to other states]. We’re having a great time in Ohio and I think have a real chance of winning Ohio. It’s exciting to be here.”
