FEC Fines Marco Rubio’s 2010 Senate Campaign $8K

Miami Herald Reports: Marco Rubio’s 2010 Senate campaign committee agreed to pay an $8,000 fine as part of a settlement with the Federal Election Commission for violating campaign finance laws in connection with more than $210,000 in contributions.

The settlement with Marco Rubio for U.S. Senate and its treasurer Keith A. Davis was reached March 19 and reported on FEC’s website on Friday. It comes at a time when Rubio is frequently mentioned as Mitt Romney’s potential vice-presidential running mate.

The FEC actions are considered civil infractions and centered around contributions made when Rubio’s campaign was swamped with donations from across the nation as he rocketed to political stardom in 2010. He defeated Charlie Crist in the GOP primary, and then beat Crist — who ran as an independent — and Democrat Kendrick Meek in November 2010.

Cantor-Allied ‘Young Guns Network’ Urges Non-Republicans to Vote in Lugar May 8 Race

The Young Guns Network, a group led by two former top aides to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, is spending $100,000 in the primary between  Sen. Richard Lugar and state treasurer Richard Mourdock in a bid to protect the Indiana incumbent – and here’s what some of that mail looks like. A lit piece that the YG Network dropped focuses, as they’d said it would, on energy policy – but it is targeted to non-Republicans, as it reminds voters that Indiana’s GOP primary is an open one in which Democrats and independents can vote. “Indiana does not have party registration,” the mail piece says over a picture of a smiling child giving a thumbs-up sign. “You simply need to show up at your polling location on May 8, 2012 to vote for Senator Dick Lugar in the Republican Primary.” – Maggie Haberman

Netanyahu Planning for Elections by Fall

Likud sources said on Saturday that the national elections are likely to be  held between September and November. Anticipating the coming elections Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is  already meeting strategic advisors and survey experts, a political source said. “Netanyahu’s associates are pressing him to push up the elections,” the source  said. “Whichever way you look at it, the government will not make it to the end of  the year,” a Likud source said. Another Likud source said “Netanyahu doesn’t want to be the one to push up  the elections. He also doesn’t want to hold them after failing to extend the  budget.” – Haaretz Via Forward

While DOJ Has ‘No Objection’ to NYS Senate Redistricting, Courts May Interject

State of Politics Reports: The Department of Justice today gave what is known as “preclearance” under the Voting Rights Act to New York’s reapportionment plan, with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s office writing that it had “no objection” to the Republican-drawn Senate plan. The news is sure to hearten Senate Republicans, who feel the pending legal hurdles on redistricting that remain will also be cleared.

The letter sent today to Senate Republican lawyer Michael Carvin notes that while the DOJ is signing off on the plan, that does not bar future lawsuits. Senate Democrats are hopeful that the newly drawn sixty-third district in the Capital Region will be tossed out by the state Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court. And a suit is still pending in federal court over the redistricting process itself.

Roll Call Analysis: ‘IF’ All Goes Well, NY Dems ‘Probably,’ ‘Possibly’ to Pick up One House Seat

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, led by New York Rep. Steve Israel, has noted that there are no truly safe Republican seats anymore in the Empire State. That’s true, and in a wave election, Democrats could gain a bonanza of districts in a state that is fundamentally a Democratic stronghold. But a wave election favoring Democrats doesn’t appear likely this cycle. Also helping to counteract the Democratic nature of the state in competitive races: Former New York Gov. George Pataki (R) has launched a super PAC dedicated to supporting the state’s Republicans running for the House. If there’s a slight lean to the overall House outlook in New York, it’s probably in Democrats’ favor, with a possible net gain of one seat. – Roll Call

Williamsburg, NY State Senator Dilan to Face Dem Primary

According to sources, Democrat NY State Senator Martin Malavé Dilan will face a Primary in September. The candidate, from within Brooklyn Borough Hall, is challenging the forces of Assemblyman and Brooklyn Dem Party Boss Vito Lopez.

Dilan’s district was altered due to redistricting but will still represent sections of the Hasidic Williamsburg. Dilan is the father of NYC Councilman Eric Dilan who is running – with the backing of Lopez - in a Primary against Dem Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez.

Dem-Turned-Republican Nachman Caller to Register 3,000 Voters for GOP in Super Jewish District

City and State Reports: A non-profit founded and chaired by Republican Senate candidate Nachman Caller has launched an effort to register 3,000 new, primarily Republican voters in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Borough Park, according to Caller’s political adviser.

The adviser, Michael Fragin, said that Caller’s non-profit, The Family First Organization, was now beginning the efforts to register the voters in the heavily Orthodox Jewish enclave, an effort that also would obviously also be helpful to Caller’s campaign. Fragin said he did not know who funded the non-profit, which Fragin said was a 501(c)4, though Caller, a wealthy real estate lawyer, is himself obviously a likely candidate.

Caller used the same organization to bash Councilman Lew Fidler’s position on gay marriage through newspaper ads, during the Senate special election between Councilman Lew Fidler and Republican David Storobin. That effort, along with the voter registration efforts, could help Caller gain credibility with Republican voters, especially since Caller is a political unknown who previously had been registered as a Democrat. Caller is reportedly willing to spend $100,000 of his own money in the Senate race.

ONLINE VIDEO AD: Simcha Felder Hit for Backing and Now Dumping Obama

Report: Storobin, Caller Meet to Discuss Super Jewish Options

Last night, Republican State Senate candidates David Storobin and Nachman Caller met to discuss the current state of affairs in the district that they are both seeking to represent (Super Jewish District SD17), according to multiple sources. Each of the candidates, presumably, would prefer to have an uncontested primary so he could wade into the general election from a position of strength. One source described the meeting as partially a discussion as to who would be the stronger challenger to Democratic candidate Simcha Felder, but Michael Fragin, an adviser to Mr. Caller, described it as more of a general discussion. – Colin Campbell

Felder: Obama’s ‘Been a Terrible President…I Will Certainly Not be Voting for the President’

Nachman Caller, a wealthy but politically unknown Republican, campaign circulated a photo of Caller voting in Tuesday’s presidential primary for Republican Mitt Romney. That was also meant highlight the fact that Felder voted in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary for Barack Obama – a vote could prove problematic in the Senate race, since Obama is deeply unpopular in Brooklyn’s Orthodox community. Felder says he now regrets the decision, and would not repeat it. “He’s been a terrible president,” Felder said of Obama. “Unfortunately, I was wrong, and I will certainly not be voting for the president in the upcoming election.” – Chris Bragg

Looking at the Orthodox Jewish Vote for 2013 NYC Mayor Race

Colin Campbell Writes: Even though the community’s voters might side strongly with the Republican candidate in the 2013 mayoral race, they are mostly registered as Democrats and candidates seeking to win the Democratic primary are extensively courting the community.

“The community is very aware that the winner of the Democratic primary is likely to be the next mayor because of the current lack of a credible Republican candidate,” Councilman David Greenfield said when asked about the race. “As a result, I believe that you will see very high Orthodox Jewish turnout in the 2013 Democratic primary. The community also recognizes that if it’s a tight race, the seven or eight percentage points that the Orthodox Jewish vote makes up in a primary could definitely make the difference.” Read more »

France’s Jews debate support of rightist Le Pen

A few years ago, policeman Michel Thooris worked for the Jewish Crif, the umbrella organization for France’s Jewish groups, helping it fight anti-Semitism in the vigilance bureau. Now, he’s running for parliament for the National Front, yet he says there’s no contradiction between the two. “I’m not going to share with you what Crif officials told me. But my belief is that it’s natural to turn to [Marine] Le Pen when you’re Jewish. She fights crime and Islamism and that means she defends Jews,” Thooris told Haaretz.

Not so long ago, the whole Jewish community condemned Le Pen supporters, such as Richard Sulzer who has long worked for the Le Pens. “He was a respected professor, but when he chose Le Pen, his wife left him,” said one Jewish community leader. Yet, Le Pen’s new supporters say their own situation isn’t as tough. Read More at Haaretz

Noach Dear Insider: ‘Community, Not Establishment, Will Decide on Super Jewish Senator’

Simcha Felder picked up today the endorsements from NYC Councilman David Greenfield and NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind. However, Noach Dear, who serves currently as a Civil Court Judge, is willing to put up a fight if he decides to actually run.

Look, said someone who knows Dear’s thinking up close. “The Jewish Community is not going to vote for a puppet just because the Establishment decided to hold a Press Conference.” If the Turner-Weprin, Fidler-Storobin and Lazar-Greenfield races show something, notes this Dear insider, it is that the Community wants a candidate who will be out there working for every vote, and not be forced to vote for someone to fit the agendas of a few. Greenfield and Hikind Endorse Felder

Earlier today, former Councilman Simcha Felder got a big boost to his recently announced State Senate campaign with the formal endorsement of the two most prominent elected officials in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community: Councilman David Greenfield and Assemblyman Dov Hikind. Their endorsements were expected, as Mr. Hikind and Mr. Greenfield had already been extraordinarily effusive in their praise, more of which was generously heaped onto Mr. Felder today as well. – Colin Campbell

No Official Answer with Whom Felder Will Caucus if he Wins

Chris Bragg Reports:  At an endorsement press conference today in Borough Park, Councilman David Greenfield and Assemblyman Dov Hikind heaped praise upon Simcha Felder, the ex-councilman both lawmakers are backing in Brooklyn’s new “Super-Jewish” state Senate district.

But definitive answers to the question of whom Felder, a Democrat, would ultimately caucus with in Albany remained elusive. Read more »

Jewish House Members Raised on Average $1,421,905 This Cycle

Only 24 of the 435 full members of the House of Representatives are Jewish. All but one of them are Democrats. Boehner: New York’s GOP Reps Are ‘Frankly Pretty Vulnerable’

Colin Campbell Writes: House Speaker John Boehner sounded downright pessimistic on his party’s odds in New York during a Fox News interview earlier today, The Hill reports.

“I believe that we will, but we’ve got a real challenge,” Mr. Boehner said when asked about Republican chances of holding onto their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. “I would say that there is a 2-in-3 chance that we win control of the House again but there’s a 1-in-3 chance that we could lose.”

“We have 50 of our members in tough races, 89 freshmen running for their first reelections and we have 32 districts that are in states where there is no presidential campaign going to be run, no big Senate race and we call these orphan districts,” he continued. “You take 18 of them, California, Illinois and New York, where you know we’re not likely to do well at the top of the ticket and those districts are frankly pretty vulnerable.”

81% French Israelis Voted for Sarkozy

Hard figures on the Jewish vote are scarce, as French pollsters are not allowed to ask about religion in election surveys, and the number of French Jewish voters is negligible… In Tel Aviv, voting results released Monday by the French Embassy showed Sarkozy receiving 81 percent of the 9,302 votes cast there. Eight percent voted for Hollande and 4 percent for Le Pen… French Jewry is approximately half a million strong, accounting for 0.6 percent of the national electorate, according to a study by the Cevipof polling company. – JTA

Hikind Announces ‘Super Jewish Press Conference’ for Tuesday Backing Felder [Updated]

Assemblyman Dov Hikind writes on his blog today: “Councilman Greenfield and I are looking forward to a Super Jewish Press Conference tomorrow for candidate Simcha Felder. We will be joined by Rabbinic leaders, Mosdos and Askonim in a show of genuine unity for Simcha.”

Felder is running for the ‘Super Jewish State Senate District’ in New York.

The planning of this Press Conference was first reported here by Gestetner Updates Saturday Night:

“It is expected that within a short period, representatives of major Jewish organizations and key community leaders will publicly declare their support for Felder in the form of a press conference. This conference promises to bring a stronger and a broader group than just the 18 Activists, 7 Children, 5 Rabbis, and three Community Leaders who stood with Greenfield when he endorsed Democrat Lew Fidler for SD 27 in mid March.”

Update 1:19 pm: The presser is expected to take place at 18th Ave. and 56th Street, at 11:00 AM.

Rabbi Boteach Raised $90K in First Quarter for his NJ9 House Run

Rabbi Shmuley ended March with $74,191 cash on hand, after spending only $16,280 in the first quarter. He will be up against Bill Parscell or Steve Rothman in November depending who of the two will win the Democratic Primary.

Perhaps he didn’t raise a lot of money, but it is a serious showing for someone who never ran and for someone who did not have the full three months to raise funds.

This last Friday The Hill reported that ”Rabbi Shmuley has been put “on the radar” by the National Republican Congressional Committee. The designation is the second out of four steps in the “Young Guns” program to recruit new and viable Republican candidates for the House.”
