As part of a Special Edition by the Yiddish-language publication “A Blik Arim Dee Velt” (A Look Around the World) commemorating the two-week mark since Leiby Kletzky A”H was laid to rest, Political and Community Leaders provided me the following statements. (It is available in Yiddish in the latest edition of A Blik):
By: Yossi Gestetner
Eric Schneiderman, New York State Attorney General: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Leiby Kletzky family as we collectively mourn the devastating loss of an innocent life. To his family and the people of New York, they shall be assured that the law enforcement community stands united in bringing Leiby’s murderer to justice for this horrific and unspeakable crime.”
Rabbi Chiam David Zwiebel, Agudah Yisroel: “The question we need to ask ourselves is not just what we should do to better protect our innocent young kinder’lach from the dangerous outside world, but also what we should do to better ensure that the next troubled young person in our midst will receive the attention he needs — medical attention as well as human attention — to prevent him from becoming a menace to himself and the community.”
Rabbi Abe Friedman, Community Representative to Law Enforcement Agencies: “This catastrophic tragedy is nothing short of another 9/11, affecting not only the Jewish community, but every parent of every faith. It is a wake-up call to every parent and child: The world as we know it has changed and we must make our children aware of our new reality. Klal Yisroel is to be commended for the unbelievable display of Achdus that was displayed during this time, as countless individuals, communities and organizations came together to contribute in any way they could. Be it searching, donating money, assisting volunteers and the NYPD, and at the levaya in showing support for the Kletzky family. Additionally, the NYPD and other members of law enforcement should be recognized for their swift response and sensitivity throughout this ordeal. While hundreds of children go missing on a weekly basis, it was clear that they took this case very personally. In fact, after learning of Leiby’s brutal murder, I personally saw numerous officers who kept their police shields covered, a gesture of respect normally displayed for a fallen officer.
Dov Hikind, New York State Assemblyman: “I was and still am amazed at the tremendous show of unity in our community and the unbelievable effort on the part of the Shomrim and the NYPD. I am hopeful that this achdus will last well into the future. I am also absolutely in awe of the strength and courage of Leiby’s parents and family. When I asked Nachman how he was, this man, who just lost his son less than two weeks ago, had the presence of mind to ask after my well-being. That, to me, is simply incredible. I continue to pray for the continued healing of the entire Kletzky family and all those who have been forever impacted by the devastating loss of Leiby.”
NYC Council Member David Greenfield: “The tragic death of Leiby Kletzky, a”h, shook the frum community, and all of New York City, to its core. During this difficult time, the achdus of our community that was displayed during and after the search has given us all strength as a community. In Leiby’s memory, I am introducing legislation that would establish a citywide safe haven program allowing businesses and homeowners that pass background checks to display a sticker letting children who are lost, hurt or afraid, know that there is someplace safe to go for help. I continue to keep the Kletzky family in my thoughts and prayers and I will do whatever I can as a member of the City Council to ensure that Leiby’s legacy endures.”
Yakov Daskal, Shomrom: “The hurt that caused will always linger. A call to Boro Park Shomrim about a missing child will take on a completely different meaning.”
Yankee German, “Two weeks later the world is still up with the Kidush Hashem that we had the Zechuah to find the body and berry the corps, and to bring together Klal Yisroel to do Teshuva together.”
Meier Hersh Berger, Chesed Shell Emes: “To the community I say: As much as we sometimes see infighting, deep down we are one. No one asked which Sekt Leiby belongs, or to which fraction of a Sekt he belongs. Everyone just went out and gave away hour in extreme weather to search! So the infightings are just smoking screens and on the top, but deep down we are ONE! “To the Father Reb Nachman I say: Leiby must have had a tremendous Zechus, that he was the one to show us the above message, and your Hesped was the topping of the Kiddush Hashem.
Zev Brenner, Talk Show Host: “The only possible silver lining in the horrendous killing of Leiby Kletzky was the sense of unity displayed by 5000 volunteers who really didn’t have much connection to one another except they wanted to help in finding a little boy who had disappeared. They wanted to do something concrete and they came from all over to do whatever they could. Groups that normally don’t work together set aside their differences for the sake of helping Leiby. If that sense of unity can continue to prevail that would be a wonderful legacy for the soul of Leiby Kletzky.”
Ezra Friedlander, CEO, The Friedlander Group: “The community comes together when there is a crisis, now what’s required is to continue the atmosphere of unity and channel it towards an endeavor of with the widest possible reach.”
